Three riddles:
- What can cause a child to regress overnight
from a loving, gregarious toddler into a silent, withdrawn stranger?
- How can an adolescent have a genius I.Q.,
yet be unable to tell a story or get a joke?
- What affliction robs children of their
childhood, adolescents of their self-esteem and adults of their ability to
find employment commensurate with their ability?
The answer in each case, is Autism.
Autism is a developmental disorder that
manifests itself in early childhood and affects the functioning of the brain,
primarily in the areas of social interaction and communication. Children with
autism look like other children but do not play or behave like other children.
They must struggle daily to cope and connect with the world around them.
According the The Autism Society of
America, there are currently more that a million people living with some
form of autism in the US alone, and the number is on the rise. In fact,
there has been a tenfold spike in the number of children diagnosed with
autism over the past 20 years, so that now plagues as many as 1 out
of every 166 children. And yet there is still no
known cause for this affliction; no proven cure and no real understanding
of why people with autism are the way they are.
This hasn't stopped Hollywood from
exploiting the enigma, however. Ever since "Rainman" hit the
theaters a dozen years ago, there's been a rash of movies and TV docu-dramas
featuring glassy-eyed, silent, yet undeniably appealing, children with
surprising savant powers or baffling behaviors. Unfortunately, these
stereotypical depictions have only served to reinforce our society's
prevailing ignorance about this multi-faceted disorder.
In Funny Wiring,
I have recounted my personal experience in living and working
with a child with autism from diagnosis through adolescence up
to adulthood
I have written a unique book about this
intriguing syndrome, entitled, Funny
Wiring: Living With and Piecing Together the Puzzle of Autism. I
have written this book, in part, to
set the record straight; to clarify what autism is and what it isn't. There are
many books about autism on the market and more are appearing every year as the
prevalence of the syndrome increases, but none is as all encompassing and
comprehensive as mine. For proof of this, click here for the complete outline.
In Funny Wiring, I present and delve into all
aspects of the syndrome, focusing on strategies and methodologies I found
helpful in coping with and addressing the language, learning and behavioral
challenges that children with autism present to parents and teachers. I tell a
tale of despair, of confusion, of frustration, humiliation, dedication, love and
ultimately, of hope and fulfillment.
But Funny Wiring goes far beyond story
telling. It is also a recording of three years of extensive research into
autism. In it I’ve examined
autism from every possible angle. I’ve taken the best of all that’s been
written on the subject and added to it information gleaned from my own extensive
research on the human brain, on sensory integration, on neuro-biochemistry,
microbiology and nutritional healing. In twelve “What’s Going On”
sections, I’ve delved into every facet of the syndrome: its neurological,
psychological and biochemical causes and manifestations, as well as detailing
current and possible treatments.
If you go to Amazon.com or any other bookstore
and run a search for books on autism you will likely find books that cover one
or at most two of the following topics:
- Basic information about Autism: what it is,
how it’s diagnosed and how it runs its developmental course
- Behavioral modification (for early
childhood)
- Teaching strategies and/or activity
schedules
- Other educational/therapeutic interventions
(mostly for young children), including Facilitated Communication and Auditory
Integration Training
- Stories of life with a child/family member
with autism, including accounts of the “miraculous recoveries” of
preschoolers
- Accounts of autism’s effect on the family
and/or on siblings
- Adolescents and/or adults with autism
- Autobiographies/first hand accounts by
adults with Aspergers
- Information on Asperger’s syndrome
- Information on developmental disabilities
in general
- Psychological aspects of autism, including
theory of mind
- Medical aspects of autism.
- Neurobiology of autism
- Case studies of individuals with autism
- Resource and/or treatment guides
Funny
Wiring covers the full gamut: from diagnostic and assessment practices, to
educational methodologies, to dietary interventions, to the very latest
neurological and biochemical facts and findings
Not to mention, the story of a beautiful child
struggling to cope and connect, and parents trying to wend their way through the
precarious perils and pitfalls that autism spectrum presents.
A parent or professional reading Funny
Wiring will come away from the reading knowing exactly how to begin teaching
and treating an autistic child, as well as knowing everything there is to know
-- right up to the minute -- about autism.
The general public will come away
from the reading with a far greater understanding of just what autism is and isn’t,
and hopefully with a greater appreciation of those who must struggle daily to
live within the parameters of what our society considers “normal.”
Currently, there are well over one hundred thousand
adults and over five hundred thousand children living with autism in this
country. Ten years ago, only one child in ten thousand bore a diagnosis of
autism. Two years ago it was one child in 500. Today it is one child in 166.
If this trend continues in
five more years it could well be one in 100!
In the state of California, the number of
autistic children seeking social services has more than quadrupled in the past
15 years, from fewer than 4,000 in 1990 to over 20,000 today, and this alarming trend is repeating itself in cities,
towns and communities all over the country.
In fact, autism affects more
children than almost all other childhood disorders combined. The problem is five
times as common as Down syndrome and three times as common as juvenile diabetes.
If you haven't as yet been touched by this syndrome, either as a parent or
working professional, you probably know of a family that has, and if you don't
know of a family that has, odds are you soon will.
I have written this book for all those who have
someone with autism in their lives or who have been touched in some way by this
mystifying syndrome.
